The number sense: How the mind creates mathematics by Stanislas Dehaene

چکیده

Objectives: The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of intuitive mathematics. In particular, students will learn about natural mathematical skills, primarily in humans, and the evidence that illuminates them. Students will also be introduced to the idea that our mathematical ability is part of our universal human nature, and a product of evolution by natural selection. Students will learn about the domains in which people should be good with numbers, natural mathematics, and domains in which working with numbers is not intuitive, formal mathematics. Students will be encouraged to think about future empirical directions in this area.

RUNNING HEAD: Number Sense and Developmental Dyscalculia Number Sense and Developmental Dyscalculia

In this chapter we review the possible biological bases for developmental dyscalculia, which is a disorder in mathematical abilities presumed to be due to impaired brain function. By reviewing what is known about the localization of numerical cognition functions in the adult brain, the causes of acquired dyscalculia, and the normal development of numerical cognition, we propose several hypothes...

Developmental trajectory of number acuity reveals a severe impairment in developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia is a learning disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge about numbers and arithmetic. It is widely assumed that numeracy is rooted on the "number sense", a core ability to grasp numerical quantities that humans share with other animals and deploy spontaneously at birth. To probe the links between number sense and dyscalculia, we used a psychophysical test to...
